How cruising actually works

First-time cruisers often have the same questions. Here's everything you need to know before you sail.

1
You pick a destination & length
Cruises range from 3-night Bahamas getaways to 14-night Mediterranean adventures. Most popular sailings are 7 nights. I help you find the right length for your budget and time off.
2
You choose a cabin type
Inside cabins (no window) are the most affordable. Oceanview, balcony, and suite categories step up in price and experience. I'll walk you through what's worth it for your group.
3
The ship is your hotel & entertainment
Once onboard, your cabin, most meals, and all entertainment are included. You spend days at sea or exploring ports, and nights enjoying shows, dining, and activities on the ship.
4
Port days are yours to explore
At each destination, you can book shore excursions (snorkeling, city tours, beach days) or explore on your own. I help you choose the best excursions for your group.
5
What's included vs. extra
Most food, entertainment, and activities are included. Drinks packages, specialty restaurants, shore excursions, and gratuities are typically extra. I always break this down clearly so there are no surprises.
6
Age requirements
All major cruise lines require at least one guest aged 21+ per cabin. Disney Cruise Line also requires a 21+ lead booker. Minors traveling with parents are always welcome — it's about who signs the booking.
Common questions

Cruise FAQ

Everything people ask me before their first (or fifth) sailing.

For closed-loop cruises (departing and returning to the same US port), US citizens can use a birth certificate and government-issued ID instead of a passport. However, I always recommend a passport — if there's a medical emergency at a foreign port, you'll need one to fly home. It's worth the peace of mind.
For popular sailings (Caribbean in December, Alaska in summer, Disney any time), 6–12 months in advance is ideal. You'll get better cabin selection and sometimes early-booking discounts. That said, last-minute deals do exist — I keep an eye on those too if you're flexible.
Cruises are actually one of the best family vacation options — kids' clubs, pools, activities, and entertainment keep everyone busy, and parents get actual downtime. Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Line are particularly excellent for families. Disney requires a 21+ lead booker but welcomes children of all ages.
Standard cruise fares include your cabin, buffet and main dining room meals, most entertainment (shows, pools, activities), and basic non-alcoholic beverages. Extra costs typically include: specialty restaurants, alcoholic drinks, shore excursions, spa treatments, Wi-Fi, and gratuities. Some cruise lines (like Virgin Voyages) include more in the base fare — I always tell you exactly what to expect upfront.
Yes — I recommend it strongly for cruises. If you miss your departure port, get sick on board, or need emergency medical evacuation at sea, costs can be enormous without coverage. I can help you find the right travel insurance policy alongside your cruise booking.
You pay the exact same price — cruise lines set fixed rates. The difference is you get my expertise, my time, and my advocacy at no cost. I handle the research, watch for price drops, remind you of payment deadlines, and if something goes wrong, you have a real person fighting for you — not a call center.
